Foods Women with Gestational Diabetes Can Eat

As we have talked earlier in my blog entries any type of diabetes is based on the glycemic index. This is a measure of how fast sugar (glucose) is released from food into bloodstream. Food with a low glycemic index releases the sugar into the blood stream at a slower rate; this produces the full feeling that comes from eating (Brand-Miller, Marsh, & Sandall, 2009).

Rules to follow if you have gestational diabetes (Zehle et al., 2008).
  • Don't skip meals... This makes sense because if you do so you risk overeating at a later time during the day.table.
  • Try poprtioning your meals into about 5-7 smaller portions instead of the normal (breakfast, lunch and dinner).
  • Breakfast is the most important meal and this is the meal where your sugar level sare highest so stay away from carbs and eat your protein. Choose whole grains, cereals, fruits, milk, eggs, fish and nuts.
